چکیده

Passive microwave radiometers on-board satellites can penetrate clouds and can monitor the global sea ice distribution on daily basis. The authors have developed an algorithm to extract thin ice area in the Sea of Okhotsk from the passive microwave sensor AMSR2 on-board GCOM-W1 satellite. The algorithm uses the brightness temperature scatter plots of AMSR2 19GHz polarization difference(V–H) vs 19GHz V polarization. The results were verified using simultaneously collected MODIS images in the Sea of Okhotsk. The most of the thin ice areas visually identified in the MODIS images were automatically extracted from AMSR2 data using the algorithm.

A Study on Extracting the Trend of Thin Ice Distribution in the Sea of Okhotsk Using Amsr-e and Amsr2 Data

Passive microwave radiometers onboard satellite can penetrate clouds and can monitor the global sea ice distribution on daily basis. It is not easy to extract sea ice thickness information from satellite data. In 2012, the authors have developed a method to detect thin ice area using the brightness temperature data derived from the passive microwave sensor AMSR-E onboard Aqua satellite. The bas...

Instrument Performance and Calibration of Amsr-e and Amsr2

The Global Change Observation Mission (GCOM) consists of two satellite observing systems and three generations to achieve global, comprehensive, and long-term Earth monitoring. The first satellite of the GCOM-W (Water) series will be GCOM-W1 with the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-2 (AMSR2) onboard. AMSR2 is a successor of AMSR on the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite-II (ADEOS-II) and...

Thin Ice Area Extraction Using Amsr-e Data in the Sea of Okhotsk

Passive microwave sensors onboard satellites, such as SSMI or AMSR-E, can penetrate clouds and can monitor the global sea ice distribution on daily basis. However, since the footprint size of passive microwave sensors are rather large, approx. 38x30kmfor SSM/I 37GHz and approx.8x14km for ASMR-E 37GHz, extraction of sea ice thickness with passive microwave sensors is not easy. In this study, we ...

First Assessment of the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) Soil Moisture Contents in Northeast Asia

The Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) onboard the Global Change Observation Mission 1–Water (GCOM-W1) was launched by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in May 2012. The AMSR2 is the follow-on model of the AMSR-Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) onboard the Aqua satellite. An assessment of the reliability of the soil moisture estimations from the newly launched passive se...

Development of Amsr-e Thin Ice Algorithm in the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans, and the Okhotsk Sea

The heat insulation effect of sea ice is greatly reduced in thin ice area. Turbulent heat flux to the atmosphere at the thin ice surface is possibly 2 orders of magnitude larger than that at the thicker ice surface. In coastal polynya, which is mostly covered with thin ice, sea ice is formed very actively because of the large amount of heat loss to the atmosphere. Further, dense shelf water (DS...
